Knowing how to fix cold radiators upstairs starts with recognising where the heat is stopping, then carrying out a few safe checks before deciding whether a heating engineer is needed.
An upstairs radiator problem can be particularly frustrating during colder weather. Heat naturally rises, but your heating water still has to be pumped through pipework and radiators at the right pressure. Air, sludge, a sticking valve or an incorrectly balanced system can all prevent that from happening properly.
Check whether the problem affects one radiator or the whole upstairs
First, turn the heating on and allow it to run for 20 to 30 minutes. Check every radiator in the property, not just the cold one. This gives you useful clues about the fault.

After bleeding, check the boiler pressure gauge. On many sealed systems, pressure should normally sit around 1 to 1.5 bar when cold, though you should always follow the instructions for your boiler. Bleeding releases water as well as air, so pressure can drop. If it falls too low, the boiler may stop working or fail to circulate heat effectively.
Repressurising the system
If the pressure is below the recommended level, use the filling loop fitted beneath or near the boiler to top it up. Open the valves gradually and watch the gauge closely. Once it reaches the correct cold pressure, close both valves fully.
Take care not to over-pressurise the system. If you are unsure which valves to use, have an older boiler, or the pressure repeatedly drops after topping up, stop there and arrange a professional inspection. Ongoing pressure loss can indicate a leak, faulty expansion vessel or another boiler fault that should not be ignored.
Make sure both radiator valves are open
Each radiator normally has two valves at the bottom. One is usually the thermostatic radiator valve, often marked with numbers. The other is the lockshield valve, which may have a plain plastic cap.
Turn the thermostatic valve up to its highest setting. If the radiator remains cold, remove the thermostatic head if you can do so without forcing it. Underneath is a small metal pin. It should move up and down gently when pressed. If it is stuck down, the valve may be closed even though the dial says otherwise.
A stuck pin can sometimes be freed with gentle repeated pressure, but do not pull it out with pliers or apply excessive force. This can damage the valve and cause a leak. If it will not move freely, a heating engineer can repair or replace the valve.
Check that the lockshield valve is open too. It is easy for this valve to be shut after decorating, carpet fitting or previous maintenance. Turn it anticlockwise slightly, noting its original position first. Avoid opening it fully without reason, as this can affect the balance of the whole heating system.

When all downstairs radiators get very hot while upstairs ones only become lukewarm, your system may be out of balance. Water follows the easiest route around the pipework.
