Why Is My Boiler Losing Pressure? Common Causes

A pressure gauge sitting below 1 bar can quickly turn into cold radiators, unreliable hot water and a boiler lockout. If you are asking, “why is my boiler losing pressure?”, the short answer is that water is leaving your sealed central-heating system - or the system is not managing pressure correctly. Topping it up may restore the heating for a while, but repeated pressure loss needs investigating rather than simply refilling.

For most homes in Dartford, North Kent and South East London, a healthy sealed system sits at roughly 1 to 1.5 bar when cold. The reading will rise when the heating is running, often towards 2 bar, then fall again as the system cools. That normal movement is very different from a gauge that keeps dropping towards zero.

Why is my boiler losing pressure?

Your boiler, radiators and pipework form a closed loop. Once filled, water should circulate around that loop without needing regular replacement. If the pressure falls over days or weeks, there is usually a leak, a faulty component or a recent change to the system that has allowed water or pressure to escape.

The speed of the drop offers a useful clue. Pressure that falls within hours after being topped up can point to a more significant leak or a fault inside the boiler. A slow fall over several weeks may be a tiny leak, a passing pressure-relief valve or a radiator valve that only seeps when the system heats up. Either way, a boiler should not need frequent repressurising.

A visible leak on radiators or pipework

Small leaks are the most common reason for pressure loss. Check around radiator valves, pipe joints, exposed copper pipes, towel rails and beneath the boiler. A leak may not form a puddle. It can leave a faint green or white deposit on copper, rusty staining around a radiator valve, damp flooring or a patch beneath a pipe boxing.

Leaks can be harder to find in properties where pipework runs under floors, behind kitchen units or inside walls. Do not lift floors or dismantle boiler panels to search for one. A qualified heating engineer can pressure-test the system and inspect the parts that homeowners cannot safely access.

Water escaping from the pressure-relief pipe

Most boilers have a safety device called a pressure-relief valve. If pressure rises too high, the valve opens to discharge water outside through a copper pipe, often near an external wall. After it operates, it may fail to reseal fully, allowing a steady drip that can be easy to miss.

On a dry day, look at the end of this pipe without touching it. If it is dripping or the ground below is consistently wet, this is a strong indication that the relief valve or the component controlling system expansion needs attention. The water may only discharge while the heating is on, so checking once does not always rule it out.

A faulty expansion vessel

Water expands as it heats up. An expansion vessel inside or close to the boiler absorbs that change, helping the system stay within a safe pressure range. When the vessel loses its air charge or its internal diaphragm fails, pressure can climb sharply as the boiler warms up.

The pressure-relief valve then releases water to protect the system. Once everything cools, the gauge can be left unusually low. This often creates a familiar pattern: the boiler is topped up, pressure climbs close to or above 2.5 bar during use, then drops again afterwards. Repressurising alone will not correct the cause.

A leak or fault inside the boiler

Internal components such as the heat exchanger, pump seals, automatic air vent or connecting joints can leak. Some faults are hidden by the boiler casing, which should only be removed by a Gas Safe registered engineer. A boiler may show no obvious water outside, yet still lose pressure through a slow internal leak.

If you notice staining below the boiler, unusual noises, an error code or pressure falling rapidly, arrange professional boiler diagnostics. Continuing to run a boiler that is frequently losing pressure can lead to further faults and repeated breakdowns.

You have recently bled radiators or had work completed

Bleeding radiators releases trapped air, but it also releases a small amount of water. It is normal for the system pressure to fall slightly afterwards. Refill it to the manufacturer’s recommended cold pressure, then keep an eye on the gauge over the next few days.

The same can apply after a new radiator has been fitted, pipework has been altered or heating repairs have been completed. One top-up after this type of work can be expected. Needing to do it again and again is not.

Safe checks to make before calling an engineer

Start by checking the pressure with the heating cold. If it is below 1 bar, your boiler may display a low-pressure fault or refuse to fire. Use the filling loop only if you understand your boiler’s instructions and can do so safely. Open the valves slowly, watch the gauge and stop at the stated cold pressure, usually between 1 and 1.5 bar. Close the valves fully afterwards.

Avoid overfilling. A gauge approaching 2 bar while the system is cold leaves less room for expansion when the heating comes on and may trigger the pressure-relief valve. If you are uncertain which valves to use, it is better to book an engineer than risk creating a separate problem.

While the boiler is off and cool, check for these signs around accessible areas:

  • damp patches, drips or corrosion around radiators, valves and exposed pipes;

  • water beneath the boiler or staining on nearby cupboards, walls or ceilings;

  • a dripping external copper pressure-relief pipe;

  • pressure that rises substantially when heating is on, then falls once it cools;

  • repeated boiler fault codes, gurgling radiators or heating that cuts out.

Take a photograph of the pressure gauge before and after running the heating for an hour. This gives the engineer useful evidence, especially where the issue is intermittent. For landlords and property managers, recording the date, pressure reading and any tenant-reported symptoms can also help prevent a minor issue becoming an out-of-hours breakdown.

When low boiler pressure needs urgent attention

Low pressure is not usually a gas emergency by itself, but do not ignore water near electrical fittings, a leak coming through a ceiling or a rapidly dropping pressure gauge. Turn off the heating if it is safe to do so and arrange a prompt inspection. A hidden leak can damage floors, ceilings and neighbouring flats long before it becomes obvious.

If you smell gas, feel unwell with headaches or dizziness, or your carbon monoxide alarm sounds, leave the property and follow the relevant gas emergency procedure immediately. Do not attempt to diagnose the boiler yourself.
